| Last update 6 August. 2009 |

The explosive progress of science and technology has brought prosperity and enriched the quality of life for much of humankind. However, the advance of science and technology raises important ethical, safety and environmental issues. International efforts to address these problems are needed now more than ever. This is really what symbolizes the “lights and shadows” of science and technology.
In seeking to ensure further progress in science and technology throughout the 21st century, it is necessary to keep it under proper control through formulating shared values, and establishing a common base for promoting science and technology. For this purpose, the “Science and Technology in Society (STS) forum” is held, where not only scholars and researchers, but also policy makers, business executives and media leaders from all over the world meet and discuss science and technology issues of the 21st century.
